When filmmaker Sridhar Rangayan decided to organise a film festival on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community last year, it took a lot of effort to convince sponsors and multiplex owners to lend their support. Now in its second year, the path of the Kashish International Queer Film Festival has become easier, thanks to the success of its maiden run in 2010.

“There is a slow but steady change in the attitude of the past and now we have commercial sponsors and multiplexes vying with each other to support the cause,” said Rangayan.

What began as an initiative to spread awareness about the issues concerning the LGBT community has now evolved into an annual affair that offers movie buffs of different sexual orientation a chance to sample national and international films. And in a country where it is hard to find a single good film based on the queer community and its problems, the organisers of Kashish have managed to cull more than 100 features, documentaries and short films from India and abroad.

“We received around 204 entries and had to actually sit down and review these films,” says Rangayan who has also arranged for filmmakers to attend the festival and engage in discussions with the audience. The organisers revealed that renowned filmmaker Shyam

Benegal had helped them in procuring clearances for the films from the concerned authorities.

Bollywood actress Celina Jaitely, who is the brand ambassador of Kashish, feels that the film festival gives an opportunity to young budding filmmakers to showcase their movies. The festival will kick off on May 25 at Cinemax in Versova and Alliance Franscaise, Marine Lines.
