December is the month when schools in the city take children out on educational tours and picnics.

But, the recent incident of an eight-year-old boy received a fatal blow when he was peeping out of his school bus window has the parents worried that school buses are not strictly following safety norms.

The government resolution for school  bus safety states that any transport vehicle carrying schoolchildren should have three horizontal window steel bars, but parents are concerned that the buses hired for picnics are not fitted with proper safety equipment.
Shobha Joseph, whose son studies in a convent school in Borivli, said: “My son went for a school picnic to Lonavla and instead of the regular school bus, the school had hired luxury buses. We were surprised to see that these buses did not have window grilles or fire extinguishers.’’

Forum for Fairness, an NGO that works in the field of education, clicked pictures of a few luxury buses plying on the highway. “It is shocking to see that these buses were not following any safety norms,’’ said Jayant Jain, president of the forum.

Anil Garg, president of the School Bus Owner’s Association admits that they use luxury buses when taking children on picnics. According to Garg, the traffic authorities turned a deaf ear when the bus owners wanted to talk about safety measures in luxury buses during the formulation of the school bus policy.

To avoid any mishaps, the association decided to follow certain rules like having three bars on the window and keeping fire extinguishers near the driver.
