The Panvel police on Saturday arrested a physical training instructor of an Old Panvel school for allegedly assaulting her student. On Thursday, Lalita Singh, 28, a teacher at Barns High School, beat up standard 9 student, Aishwarya Mali, 14, after she noticed the student's shirt was unbuttoned during the physical training period. Singh asked Aishwarya to come to class where she allegedly chopped off the collar of his shirt and cut his tie and hair, an official from the Panvel police station said.

The teenager, who tried to stop his teacher, received scissor injuries on his neck in the process. His parents registered a complaint about this on Saturday, following which Singh was arrested.

"My son was admitted to Panvel Municipal Hospital and discharged on Saturday morning. He is very shaken by the incident and has had high fever since. We don't know why the teacher did what she did; she says it was because Aishwarya's shirt was unbuttoned. But such a small thing cannot elicit this kind of a response," Aishwarya's father, Bheemsen Mali, said.

Singh has been arrested under Sections 341 and 336 of the IPC, and under Section 23 of the Juvenile Justice Act. According to the police, Singh can be punished for six months, but the final decision rests with the court. The school authorities have, meanwhile, temporarily suspended the teacher.
