The state government announced on Monday that it would think about giving out service quarters to the police on an ownership basis.

Industries minister Narayan Rane said that by doling out additional FSI to developers, the state would try to give houses to policemen who have been living in the quarters for years.

The leader of opposition Eknath Khadse said that the government transferred the tenancy rights to the tenants that have been living illegally in some of the BDD chawls, but the police personnel are being given step-motherly treatment. “If the illegal stalls and tenements are transferred to their occupants, why are the police personnel not given permanent homes?” he questioned.

Minister of state for housing Sachin Ahir said, “Of 5,186 officers and 38,057 personnel serving in the city, 49% have got official service quarters. However, the home department had told us that the service quarters could not be transferred to the police personnel or officials living in the tenement.”

When the opposition opposed Ahir’s statement, Rane said, “This has been discussed in the cabinet meetings earlier too. However, we will try to give the tenements to the occupants by giving additional FSI to the developers.”
