More than 75 students from Maharashtra have made it to the list of candidates chosen for civil services announced on Wednesday.
Rahul Ashok Rekhawar from Nanded stood first in the state and ranked 15th in the national list. The state-run State Institute for Administrative Career (SIAC) in Mumbai trained over 26 students who have been selected, a number believed to be higher than any other institution in the country.
According to the primary estimate, the state can boast of more than 75 students who qualified in the civil services exam which was conducted on May 23, 2010. Following Rekhawar, Saurabh Pardhi (40th rank) and Ayush Oak (42nd rank) are among the toppers from the state. Abhijeet Chaudhari (72nd), Nilesh Kshirsagar (78th) and Aditya Prabhudesai (246th) are the other candidates from the state who have successfully cleared this very competitive exam. Nearly seven students from Thane district have also made it to the final list of 920 qualified candidates.
Ayush Oak, who holds a mechanical engineering degree, cleared the exam in his third attempt. “I could not pass the interview in the first two attempts even after passing the main exams. I decided to appear for civil services in the second year of my degree and have been preparing for it ever since,” Oak told DNA.
“No other service — be it private sector or public sector — offers the power and authority that IAS officers enjoy at a very young age. This factor fascinated me, apart from the opportunity to serve the nation in office.”
Manoj Bhide, director of SIAC said, “Hundred students from nearly 4,000 applications are enrolled every year at our centre. Though the number of students who qualified is not the highest in the recent past, the students from our institution have done fairly well,” he said. SIAC had trained 30 and 32 students who qualified in the exam in 2003 and 2007 respectively.
