Optra Systems, a Pune-based software solutions provider, announced the launch of ‘OPTRA Health’, a unit dedicated entirely to research and development (R&D) in the field of biomedical engineering, in Pune.  While making the announcement at a press conference held in the city, founder-president and CEO of OPTRA Systems, Abhijeet Gholap, said that  Dr Gauri Gholap will head this unit of OPTRA Health.

Abhijeet said, “OPTRA Health will leverage its strong R&D background and expertise to develop biomedical devices for the global market as a part of outsourced product development for its overseas clients, and would also focus on creating its own intellectual property in this domain.”

“Core research on Gene-Diseases to aid the Human Genome Project, medical instrumentation for cancer imaging, computer-aided diagnostic tools and cloud-based ‘Pay-as-you-go’ lab information management system (LIMS) have been identified as the four main areas in which OPTRA Health will work,” he added. The new state-of-the-art R&D lab has come up on 13,500 square feet with a product lab, a bio lab and a digital oncology lab.

It would have a dedicated research team of over 165 professionals with an ambitious target of filing at least 5 international patents within 2 years of operations.

The company would invest over USD 3 million in the next 18 months in this R&D unit for infrastructure and manpower.  Considering the strong R&D background of OPTRA Systems, the department of scientific and industrial research (DSIR), Government of India, has recognised OPTRA Health lab as an R&D Unit for healthcare and life sciences.

With the recognition by the government, OPTRA Health would be entitled to undertake R&D projects under the biotech industry partnership programme (BIPP) of DSIR for affordable healthcare technologies and products in the field of diagnostics and biomedical devices.
