The hike in fuel prices has given opposition parties a chance to take on the UPA government at the Centre. On Friday, opposition leaders slammed the government for its ‘flawed’ policies on fuel prices.

BJP’s former petroleum minister Ram Naik alleged that the Union government was in a war against the common people. “The UPA government took almost six years to formulate a pricing policy by appointing three different committees for the same. Yet, it failed miserably to arrive at a final decision. While they have de-regulated prices of petrol, diesel has been left untouched. The common man’s burden could have been reduced by lowering excise duty. Instead, they have advised state governments to reduce sales tax, knowing well that they will not do so,” said Naik.

Senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde went a step further and warned the government of an agitation. “The commoners are already facing problems in meeting their daily expenses. The hike in fuel prices will further burden them. The UPA came into power by appealing to the common man, but the alliance has cheated the common man. The BJP will launch an agitation against the price hike,” said Munde.

“The limit of tolerance is over. One day the fuel issue will become fiery in the form of public anger,” said Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai. “Hike in fuel prices always has a chain reaction. It also results in inflation and price rise of other essential commodities. The government has announced to end its control over fuel prices at a time when control is needed the most.”

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) general secretary Anil Shidore feared that the government’s policy to lift control on fuel prices could lead to black marketing of essential commodities. “Once market policy is applied to fuel, there will be hoarding and hurdles will be created in the supply of fuel, especially in the remote areas. The government has taken such a decision as there are no immediate elections at the Centre,” said Shidore.
