Indicating a truce of sorts, the Opposition parties attended the chief minister’s customary tea party on the eve of the assembly session, an event they had been boycotting over the last few sessions. The budget session of the assembly starts today.

Stating that the Opposition parties decided to join the tea party as boycotting was proving counter-productive, CM Prithviraj Chavan said, “It may make for great bytes on TV, but little work gets done. If you want to get work done you have to deal with us.”

The Opposition parties’ willingness to extend a handshake comes after Shiv Sena MLA Suresh Jain was arrested in connection with a corruption case, which quite upset the Opposition’s plans to hit out at the ruling benches for corruption in the state.

Expressing their resolve to question the government on various corruption scams that have come to light, Leader of the Opposition in the Vidhan Sabha Eknath Khadse said it was time that the accused are arrested as demanded by the Bombay High Court. Referring to the Adarsh scam, Leader of the Opposition in the Vidhan Parishad Vinod Tawade said the government must inquire into every decision taken by the Urban Development Department during the tenures of CMs Vilasrao Deshmukh, Sushilkumar Shinde and Ashok Chavan.

Further, the State has proposed a bill to curb unauthorised educational institutions and the courses taught there. A self-financed schools bill, to govern the schools governed by the private institutions, has been proposed.

The government has proposed nine new bills for the budget session. Apart from the new bills proposed, 13 are tabled but are pending clearance in either of the houses. Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said his government was very positive for discussions on issues raised by the Opposition.

Meanwhile, Chavan said the final decision about the transfer of the Indu Mill land for Dr Ambedkar memorial may come through in the meeting slated to be held in Delhi on March 22.
