The consistent effort of citizens’ groups-Save Open Spaces and Gulmohar Area Societies Welfare Group-have finally paid off, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) approving the ‘Juhu Vision Plan’ to provide a fillip to public spaces in the Juhu area.

Confirming having received a no-objection certificate from the BMC about four days ago, PK Das, the architect who prepared the Juhu Vision Plan, said, “Now, we expect Mhada to commence work within a month.” The vision plan includes development of public space, Irla nullah development and creation of public space, conservation of Juhu beach and its connectivity, locating the metro rail, roads network and one-ways, integration of social amenities and institution, improvement of amenities in slums and conservation of gaothans.

Considering that the open spaces in the city is very less compared to international cities like London and New York, the BMC has given the go-ahead to the vision plan, which will be taken up in three phases. “The project will take three-and-a-half years to complete,” added Das. The project is funded by Rajya Sabha MP Javed Akhtar. The citizens groups are now gearing up to complete the project within a time-frame.
