A day after chief minister Prithviraj Chavan informed legislators about a CID probe into the irregularities at 21 buildings along Palm Beach road, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) on Wednesday emphasised that only one building is being probed by the agency, and that too in connection with some other issue.

NMMC assistant director (town planning) Sanjay Banait said that the probe is on into a matter related to Cidco, for which the civic body has issued a notice to the developer of Venus Tower as it has added three more floors than the allowed 10, as per plan submitted to it.

The civic body has also issued a stop-work notice to the developer of tower, which is the only building where additional floors were constructed without NMMC’s permission.

Confirming the CID probe into the Venus Tower issue, a senior Cidco official said that the government-appointed one-member DK Sankaran committee (formed to look into allegations that Cidco officials were allotting plots to private players at rates far below market prices) had sought to review Cidco files from 2003 to 2004.

The developer of Venus Tower had put up a file for procuring the said plot in December 2004.

However, the developer was allotted the plot in January 2005 at a rate of Rs14,931 per sq-m, considered the highest bid then.

Confusion over whether to present the file of the tower, plot for which was allotted after the period under scanner got over, meant that it was sent for review.

However, things were blown out of proportion during the last winter session of assembly with opposition demanding a CID probe into the issue, which the government complied to eventually.
