For the past several days, the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) market at Vashi was receiving 50% less onions because the farmers had refused to sell the crops due to ban on its exports. This resulted in an increase in the prices of onions to some extent.

“I sell almost 150 sacks of onion each day. But due to the strike, there was less supply and demand was constantly increasing. Now the supply may become normal but it will be difficult to fill the gap that has already been created,” said Ramakant Shelke, an onion broker at the market, warning that small vendors may hike the rate for the next few days citing the shortage of onions.

Ramesh Pawar, another broker, said, “Due to the oversupply of onions, the rates may fall. But even the exporters will ask for a fresh stock of onions as their already packed onions in cargos will no more be in a condition for export and that can create shortage of onions. It will be a double-edged sword.”

The strike did not only affect the farmers, but also workers in the market. Narendra Patil, secretary of Maharashtra Rajya Mathadi union, said  due to the strike their workers’ livelihood was affected.
Sudhir Tungar, secretary of APMC, admitted that due to the strike the rates of onions have increased. “The strike had an impact on the routine supply. Each day, nearly 100 trucks were coming against the usual 125,” he said.
