The kerosene mafia on Tuesday attacked a police team conducting a raid in Rajurwadi near Umrer town about 25km from Nagpur, injuring at least 16, including two officers.

Incited by their leader and main hoarder whose house was being searched, the villagers assaulted the cops with sticks and tree branches and pelted stones at them, stunning the team led by sub divisional police officer of Umrer Sudhakar Palandurkar, police sources said.

The incident took place around 9.30 am. The police team was reportedly unprepared for a daring counter-attack, though the village allegedly has a history of kerosene hoarding and illicit liquor sale. The villagers had similarly assaulted the police about eight years ago when they had gone to bust an illicit arrack sale.

Tuesday’s raid was part of a statewide drive being carried out in the wake of the killing of additional collector Yashwant Sonawane.

The operation yielded 300 litres of kerosene illegally stored in the house of Pannalal Rajput, the main hoarder. He was known to pilfer kerosene meant to be distributed among the poor through fair price shops, police sources said. More than 50 villagers gathered around his house and assaulted the team.
