A local court sent an NRI man and his parents to two days of police custody for allegedly harassing his wife for money and forcing her to end her life, police said.
Bhakti Shah, wife of Tejas, who worked at a diamond unit in Belgium, jumped to death from the third floor Mangalkunj Apartments in Borivli yesterday. She was a mother of a five-month-old boy and had come to Mumbai for her second delivery.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim's father Bharat Jogani, her husband Tejas (32), his father Vasant Shah (62) and mother Sulsha (55) were arrested on charges of abatement of suicide and harassment, police said.
Police said that the Bhakti had gone to attend her brother's marriage in Ahmedabad a few days back and left her jewellery at her maternal house in Andheri. Upset over this, her in-laws allegedly harassed her to bring the jewellery back. She allegedly jumped to death following a heated argument.
The accused were produced before a local court, which sent them to police custody till May 13. "We are tracking the mobile phone records of Tejas and his parents, as they had called victim's father yesterday to demand jewellery and cash," B Chate, senior inspector at Borivli police station.
