Since childhood, Sudhakar Bhat and his elder sister Nalini Bhat wanted to build a hospital in their parents’ names.

To fulfil his dream, Sudhakar and Seema Bhat, an NRI couple from Kansas City in the US, donated Rs1 crore for constructing the hospital, which will be run by the Vidyadhiraj Charitable Trust.
His dream, the Meenakshi and Gangadhar Bhat Memorial Hospital at Harigram village, 10 km from Panvel, was finally ready this Dusshera on October 6.

The hospital will be run by the Vidyadhiraj Charitable Trust.

“This hospital, which will cater mostly to the senior citizens from the nearby old-age home, is our way of thanking our parents. The hospital will also admit regular patients,” said Bhat.

Born and brought up in Mumbai, Sudhakar, an engineer from Suratkal, went to the US 40 years ago. He has been associated with defence programmes like the NASA.

A few years ago, Nalini saw some brochures of Vidhyadhiraj Trust and its activities. She told her brother about the trust and they decided to pay for the construction of the hospital.

Bhat donated the money to HH Vidyadhiraj Swamiji of Gokarn Math which runs three organisations - the Ramakrishna school, which is the only English medium school in the Harigram area; Shantikunj Home, which houses more than 50 senior citizens, and now the hospital.

“My brother was impressed by the old-age home Shantikunj and felt it was necessary to build a hospital nearby to attend to the inmates. There is no proper hospital in Harigram, where most residents are poor. Another reason he chose this hospital is that he belongs to the Gowda Saraswat Brahmin community, which has started the Vidhyadhiraj trust,” said Nalini.

A member from the trust who did not wished to be named, said: “Bhat’s contribution is huge and has encouraged us to complete this task without any hurdles.”
