Apart from having strong political backgrounds, Aditya Thackeray, Poonam Mahajan and Nitesh Rane have one more thing in common. Instead of jumping into then political fray, these future leaders have presented themselves as social workers through their individual NGOs.

Political observers believe they are trying to connect with the youth through their work, which in turn will help them secure their future in politics.

Nitesh, 28, son of industries minister Narayan Rane, runs an NGO called Swabhiman. It claims to work for “youth empowerment”. The NGO has held seminars on career guidance and helped register college students in the voters’ list during the Lok Sabha polls.

“Only agitations for jobs are not enough. There is a need to build confidence in the youth to face challenges,” said Nitesh.  “We should give youth the right platform to express themselves and gain experience in professional world.”

Similarly, 28-year-old Poonam Mahajan is the daughter of late BJP heavyweight Pramod Mahajan. She has founded an NGO Pramod Mahajan Pratishthan.

The NGO has set up a college in Mahajan’s hometown Ambajogai in Beed district. Also, it is setting up a hospital in Melghat for tribals and children suffering from malnutrition. The NGO also organised a state-level essay writing competition and a music concert by gazhal singer Ghulam Ali.

“We have succeeded in interacting and connecting with the youths in an impressive manner. One thing is sure that the youngsters now know Poonamtai more for her social work,” said a close aide of Poonam.

Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray’s son Aditya, 20, is the newest entrant in the social field. He and BJP’s Shaina NC have floated an NGO, The Dream We Share, to address grievances of the youth between the age group of 18 to 25.
“We have a shared vision for Mumbai and want solutions for the city’s problems. It is up to us youngsters to build a sustainable future for the city. It’s every citizen’s movement,” said Aditya.
