Radiologists across Maharashtra have threatened to go on strike after the BMC and the state government intensified their campaign against sonography centres. In a meeting on Sunday at BYL Nair hospital, the Maharashtra State Branch of Indian Radiology and Imaging Association (MSBIRIA) decided to go on strike and stop conducting obstetric sonography.

General secretary of the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA) Dr Jignesh Thakker said: “We decided that we will go on a day’s strike or stop performing obstetric sonography forever if the state government and the BMC do not come out with a proper list of dos and don’ts for us and release our machines. We are not against the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, but harassing us in the name of law will not be tolerated. They have sealed sonography machines because of incomplete paper work. But that doesn’t prove we are conducting sex determination tests at our centres.”

The IRIA and the MSBIRIA will conduct a state-level meeting of radiologists and decide the date for the strike.
