Mumbai: Sigma One Landmark Pvt Ltd, a real estate developer, has found a solution to the problem of garbage disposal.
The company has installed an automated garbage disposal system at its Kothrud project.
Sigma One Landmark managing director Kapil Gandhi said the automated system not only disposes of garbage but also recycles the waste and converts it into organic manure. The new system was inaugurated by Karve Road ward committee chairperson Bandu Kemse, corporators Surekha Pansare, Murlidhar Mohol and Prithviraj Sutar recently.
Gandhi said the housing society residents separate the dry and wet garbage and throw it in the automated chute. From there it is transported to the organic waste composting machine. The waste is then converted into organic fertiliser via the process of decomposting.
Gandhi said that the system uses a patented technology that first treats the wet garbage in the automated machine for 10 minutes and then a bio-culture, using indigenous technology, is added to the slurry. This is then transferred to containers having an automated moisture control system to help the slurry get converted into organic manure.
"At no stage the garbage gets exposed. It is treated in an air tight sealed container," Gandhi said. The technology also helps in preventing foul smell, mosquitoes and flies.
"The entire process takes 10 days as against six months required in other methods of treating solid waste," he said. This way, the residents generate 80 to 100 kg of organic manure daily. The fertiliser is then utilised for the housing society's gardens. The excess manure is given to the garden department of the PMC.
