Instead of keeping the city roads in a good shape and penalising contractors for shoddy road work, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has slapped a fine of Rs5 lakh on the Siddhivinayak Trust for potholes on roads near the temple.

The civic body has put the blame on the temple trust for potholes near the shrine, saying barricades installed by the trust for pilgrims’ queue have damaged the road.

“We have issued a show-cause notice to the trust, asking them to explain why bollards have been put outside the temple. Why the trust should not be penalised Rs2,000 per crater. We are still awaiting a reply from them,” said Devendra Jain, assistant commissioner of G-North Ward.

“We understand that they might be doing it to control and manage the crowd on the occasion of Sankashti. But they need to follow a proper procedure. They need to take prior permission either from the traffic police or the civic body,” Jain added.

According to the notice, the mandir trust put barricades on road on the day of Sankashti. To install the barricade, the trust created a crater on the road, which later on led to more potholes.

The BMC’s ward office said 250 potholes on the road near the temple were due to installation of barricades. And the cost of filling a pothole is Rs2,000. According to the civic body’s calculation, the total cost is Rs5 lakh.

The trust officials said the temple trust created a crater on the Kakasaheb Gadgil Marg near the Nardulla Tank Maidan and another one on SK Bole Road.

The barricades were put to control and manage pilgrims gathered on the occasion of Sankashti.

Mangesh Shinde, chief executive officer of the temple trust, refused to talk on the issue. “We are trying to solve the problem at our level,” he said.
