Mumbai: The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has welcomed actor Amitabh Bachchan's announcement that he was willing to finance a Marathi film Harishchandrachi Factory on its way to the Oscar award.
MNS general secretary Shirish Parkar said, "If Bachchan is trying to pay back Maharashtra, he should be welcomed."
Bachchan had expressed desire to help the film reach maximum juries at a promotional event for his new film, Aladin. "We have always encouraged regional films. We have produced films in Marathi as well as Tamil and Telugu. I am happy that Harishchandrachi Factory has been nominated for the Oscar award. I will be happy to help them if they need," Bachchan had said.
Bachchan's AB Corporation has produced a Marathi film, Vihir (well), which is all set for release.
Last year, MNS president Raj Thackeray had questioned Bachchan's loyalty to Maharashtra and had accused the actor of promoting his home state Uttar Pradesh and ignoring Maharashtra where he became famous.
"Sachin Tendulkar, Lata Mangeshkar and Amitabh Bachchan are international figures. They should not restrict themselves to any specific region," Thackeray, a die-hard fan of Bachchan, had said.
