In an effort to promote the new eco-friendly and energy-efficient concepts and practices to ensure sustainability in agricultural sector, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has introduced the concept of agri-tourism, in collaboration with Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC).

The concept, the first of its kind, will be promoted under TERI’s endeavour called Krishi-Dhan which will focus multi-sector initiative committed to sustainable development.A special meeting between the officials from TERI, MTDC, NABARD and owners of tourism centres was recently organised in Mumbai.

“Tourism is a flourishing sector for the country, and it needs special emphasis on integrating eco-friendly practices to ensure long term sustainability. Moreover, the concept of agri-tourism has added a new dimension and novelty to tourism,” said Dr Anjali Parasnis, head, western region, TERI.

“Krishi-Dhan has been promoted to create public awareness about the existing and unexplored opportunities in different sectors of agri-business that make the agrarian sector vibrant. On this background, the agri-tourism centres could act as an option to generate extra revenue for farmers and also would provide them with employment opportunities,” said Anand Lalwani, regional coordinator, TERI Maharashtra.

To get an overview of the concept of agri-tourism, TERI and MTDC will jointly showcase the “The Rural Life of India”at the Krishi Dhan exhibition scheduled from April 28-30, 2011 at Bombay Exhibition Centre, Goregaon.
