It’s turning out to be a biting winter in the city, by its standards, thanks to the cold wave that has gripped North India. Monday was the coldest day of the season in the city with the minimum temperature plunging to 11 degrees Celsius.

Weather officials say the temperature is likely to fall to 10 degrees Celsius or even less.

According to VK Rajeev, director, India Meteorological Department, the nip in the air is likely to continue at least for the next three days. “The sudden cold that hit North India on Sunday has affected the temperature all over Maharashtra.”

Mumbaikars said that over the past few days the city has turned into a “hill station”. Deeksha Nayak, 18, student of MMK College, Bandra said, “I was thinking of going off to a hill station, but the sudden cold has turned the city into a hill station. I love this weather; finally we can bring out our jackets and woollens! This is so much better than the 10-month summers we are used to.”

The weather is also making it difficult for people to go for a run in the morning. Pankaj Khanvilkar, 29, an HR executive in a finance firm, said, “It is so cold in the morning that I am unable to go for a walk. I have started jogging an hour later than usual as it is foggy outside.”

It is especially difficult for the Std X students, with prelims on their heads and waking up in the mornings becoming difficult. Yash Pawar St Xavier’s School, Vile Parle, said, “Prelims are under way. But the weather makes me feel lazy. I am enjoying the cold, but it is also making it difficult to concentrate on my studies.”
