Mumbaiites are likely to face yet another spell of heavy rain in the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the city will witness heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm in the next 48 hours.

“We can see a low pressure area over North-east Arabian Sea and adjoining Gujarat coast. Also the offshore trough persists. The weather systems are expected to support good rain spell,” said VK Rajeev, Director IMD, Western Region.

Weather officials said that the rain spell is likely to intensify till September 6. “Heavy rainfall would be recorded in specific areas. In other parts of the city, moderate but consistent rain would be witnessed,” they added.

Meanwhile, the city on Sunday witnessed light, consistent rain. Both Colaba and Santa Cruz weather stations received 9.6 mm of rainfall. The 24-hour cycle starting from Saturday 8.30am to Sunday morning recorded 50 mm rainfall in Colaba. While Santa Cruz saw 26 mm of downpour.

Owing to low quantum of rain, the city survived the day without any major mishaps. A minor landslide occurred at Dukkaar Gulli, Antop Hill, on Saturday midnight, injuring two people — Adil Ansari, 20, and Abdul Ansari, 22. The duo was treated at Sion Hospital.

A wall collapsed at Deonar abattoir, injuring four of a family — Ravi Jadhav, 30, his wife Rani and their kids Kunal, 5, and Sophiya, 7. The wall fell on their shanty on Sunday around 5.30 pm. The injured were admitted to Sion Hospital.

Elsewhere in the city a portion of a residential building collapsed on Sunday evening. Also, sporadic incidents of tree collapses occurred.

Meanwhile, CM Prithviraj Chavan visited the Jubilee Mill compound in Sewri where five children were killed in a wall collapse incident. The CM announced a compensation of Rs1lakh for the next of kin of every victim.
