Claiming that Maharashtra is on its way to wipe out the electricity shortage and achieve self-sufficiency in power generation, governor K Sankarnarayanan today said the state will be free of load shedding by 2012.

After hoisting the tricolour here on the Republic Day, he said, "I am sure that the state will become load-shedding free by 2012. It is heartening to note that Mahagenco (government-run power generation company) is commissioning a 125 MW solar power plant in Dhule."

During the past one year, 500 MW generation capacity has been installed by Mahagenco, while in the next four months, another 1000 MW power will be generated once the Khaparkheda and Bhusawal projects become operational, he said.

Governor said Maharashtra has the largest economy in the country, accounting for 13% of the National Income.

"The economy of the state has registered an average growth of 9% over the last four years," he said.

Under the `Mega Project Policy' announced in June 2005, 169 industrial mega projects have been approved in the state with an approximate investment of Rs1,40,826 crore, which will create employment opportunities for 2.13 lakh people, the governor said.

The state has attracted the highest number of foreign direct investment proposals in the country. Of the 4175 approved projects, 1665 projects have started production with an investment of Rs42,691 crore, he said.

The state has declared 2011 as the Year of Tourism. The Maharashtra tourism development corporation has an ambitious plan to develop wild life sanctuaries, pilgrimage places and hill stations to attract tourists, he said.

Regarding education, he said the government is "making concerted efforts to increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education". The government is also contemplating establishing a technological university, he added.

Earlier, units of army, air force, navy, state police and central paramilitary forces took part in the parade at Shivaji Park grounds, in the governor's presence.
