Taking potshots at the BJP following the scandal in Karnataka where three of its ministers were caught on camera watching a porn clip in the Assembly, NCP chief and Union minister Sharad Pawar on Thursday said no party had maligned politics as much as the saffron party.
"What to say about BJP? You have seen in Karnataka the extent to which politics has been maligned by the BJP. No other party has ever done so," he said at a joint rally with Congress leaders here tonight, as a part of campaign for Mumbai civic body polls of February 16.
"One goes and sits in the Vidhan Sabha to put forth and help resolve public issues. But they (BJP members) watch photos of naked women in Vidhan Sabha. And through this if anyone wants to project a new type of (political) culture before the entire country, what can I say," he said.
"People of Maharashtra will never back those who tread on such a path. We have to remove such people (from power)."
Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, MPCC chief Manikrao Thakre and Mumbai Congress president Kripashankar Singh were among those present at the rally, held in suburban Bandra.
"How can those, who cannot even step outside their home, develop Mumbai," Chavan asked, in a jibe at Sena chief Bal Thackeray who has rarely ventured outside his house in the last few years, first due to security considerations, and of late, due to health issues.
Pawar held the 17-year rule of Shiv Sena-BJP in Mumbai responsible for the city's woes. "The number one spot Mumbai once had has gone. To reverse this slide, it is imperative that the Congress-NCP alliance be voted to power."
Pawar also made a reference to MNS chief Raj Thackeray's questioning of the funds spent by the Sena-BJP controlled Mumbai civic body.
"I saw Raj making the remarks on TV. He should know better, he was once one of them," he said.
