From this year, candidates appearing for the Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE) will have to use only ball pens and not pencils. This means they cannot erase their answers.

As candidates are now allowed to take home a copy of their answer-sheet, it will be made of a chemically-treated paper. This paper will imprint the student's answer in the copy beneath the main answer-sheet, leaving no option for students to cancel an answer later.

This year, the IIT-JEE will be conducted on April 8.

"Currently, scanned copies of the applicants' answer-sheets, which are in objective response sheet (ORS) format, is uploaded on the website. Copies are also provided on request after the results are declared. But, in this system, students will be able to take home a copy of their answer-sheet after the exam is over," said AV Mahajan, chairman, IIT-JEE Bombay zone.

“Till now, students have been using pencils to darkening the circles on the ORS, so they could just erase it if they were not sure about the answer. But, the chemically-treated answer-sheet will imprint the answers on the copy, so there cannot be cancellation.

This year, candidates have been asked to use ball pens to darken the circles on the ORS," explained Mahajan.

This year, 5.1 lakh candidates will appear for IIT-JEE across the country, of which 77,550 will be from the Bombay zone. In Maharashtra, there are 54 test centres in 12 towns, including three new locations — Kolhapur, Solapur and Ratnagiri.

The IIT-JEE has discontinued Latur as a test centre after it received less than 200 applications from the region.

“This year more than 70% candidates have applied through the online system. This shows people's acceptance of the online system, which had not been received really well last year. Even female candidate registrations have increased significantly. Last year, only 19% girls had registered for IIT-JEE. This year, the number has increased to 27%,” said Mahajan.
