Harshada Tilloo is just 10 years old, is a stand-up comediene and has donated a whopping Rs45,000 earned from her shows to the Rotary Foundation India for polio eradication.

The money was donated by the standard V student of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan School to the Rotary Foundation at a function in the city on July 4, in the presence of the Rotary International president, Kalyan Banerjee.

Daughter of popular city-based Marathi stand-up comedian, Makarand Tilloo, Harshada gained fame on the TV show Aflatoon Little Masters, a comedy reality show for children aged between 8 and 14 years on a Marathi channel.

Seated comfortably in her living room at home in Shivajinagar on Thursday, Harshada told DNA she donated her earnings to the Rotary Foundation so that she could help in the eradication of polio from the country.

“I am sure it was someone else who donated and which is why I can walk today. That is the same reason why I wish to donate even more, so that I can see many more children walking, jumping and running around with joy,’’ says Harshada in all innocence.

According to her father Makarand, Harshada came up to him one day and told him of her intention of donating for a cause. Harshada said, ‘I have been collecting money from housing society members as asked in the school and now I want to give on my own’. This statement of hers made me proud and I told her that whatever you earn in one year, we will donate that.”

Harshada is the third generation of stand-up comedians. Speaking of the high point of her fledgling career, Harshada said, “When I performed at a school in Satara, there were about 3,000 students who enjoyed my show and later lined up in front of the principal’s office for my autograph.’’

Makarand said, “Whatever it be, I am happy that my daughter is developing the sense of giving without me or anyone telling her. This is the proudest feeling for me, and this in turn has inspired some of her schoolmates to do something for others. I am happy that she could be instrumental in making some people feel and serve others.’’

Harshada is keen to become an actor and not a doctor or an engineer. “This is because I enjoy the stage and would want to become a one-woman show artiste,’’ she said.
