Mumbaikars will have to use water sparingly this Holi as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided not to supply additional water on the festival day. The decision was taken to cultivate a habit of using water judiciously amongst city residents, said a senior civic official.

“Until 2010, the BMC would supply 10% additional water on Holi day. However, extra supply was not made in 2011 for the first time and instead 15% cut was imposed. Though all the six lakes providing water to the city are full, we will not pump additional water to see people use it judiciously,” a senior civic official said, requesting anonymity.

He added resorting to such practice will ensure city doesn’t face shortage until July this year. The corporation has taken the decision even as some parts of the city face 25% water cut till today in view of work on connecting Upper Vaitarna and Bhandup Maroshi pipelines in Marol-Maroshi in Andheri.

The work had gotten underway on Monday. While the civic body talks of bringing in more discipline towards using water, the decision has evoked mixed response from city residents. “There is lack of awareness amongst people as far as water resources are concerned. There is a need to cultivate a habit of using water properly. If we do that, then there will not be any need to supply water additionally,” DK Kossambe, a Kandivli resident, said.

A Mulund-resident said, “We celebrate Holi once in a year. The BMC can ensure the excessive supply for a day at least.” The city is at present being supplied 3,450 MLD water from Tulsi, Modak Sagar (also called as lower Vaitarna), Vihar, Tansa, Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa lakes. Mumbai’s water needs though are of 4,500 MLD daily.
