Mumbai: Taxis older than 25 years will not be supplied compressed natural gas (CNG) at fuel stations, the state government told the Bombay High Court on Wednesday.

Apprising the court regarding the measures taken to enforce the plan to phase out old taxis, the government said that a list of taxi numbers, registered more than 25 years ago, had been given to Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), requesting it not to supply CNG to those.

As per a government resolution (GR), issued in August 2008, taxi owners were asked to replace taxis older than 25 years by Dec 2008. Taxi owners challenged the move in the HC, but the government refused to quash the GR and is monitoring the implementation of the phase out plan.

An affidavit filed by the regional transport officer Chandrakant Sontakke stated that MGL had been asked to inform the Regional Transport Office if they came across old taxis at their fuel stations. The traffic police will also keep a watch for old taxis plying on the roads and take strict action against owners.

Of the 7,800-odd old taxis, 6,707 applied for replacement of which 2,479 have already been replaced with new vehicles.

In addition to this steps, Govt should guard at the Airport and Railway Station where large taxis are registered as Pre-Paid Taxi Stand. When we came to Mumbai Airport and hire a Taxi nearly 90% Taxis are very very old and we feel shame for our country that we do not have good taxi. Older than 25 years should not be registered on Pre-Paid Taxi Waiting List!!!!
