Mumbaikars are raising their voice against the water cuts since a month and the tanker mafia continues for years. Hundreds of activists and locals held a rally in Kurla (West) on Thursday to protest against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The water cuts during summers in various parts of the city force the locals to purchase water from tankers at a very high rate. The tankers charge unacceptable rates of Rs3,000-Rs6,000 which should be ideally available for Rs800. Regular water cuts and the tanker mafia forced the locals to address their complaints to Swabhimaan Sangathana, a non-political organisation run by Nitesh Rane. The NGO then organised a rally to make BMC realise its fallacies and represent the frustration of the Mumbaikars.

“Mumbaikars have to rely on tanker water because the BMC is ruled by apathetic politicians. Why BMC has to carry out the pipeline maintenance work during the summer?” questions Rane. “We are standing for the basic right of a human being and will not rest till the water mafia is eradicated from the city,” said an angry protester. “There is sufficient amount of water in lakes and adequate rainfall to supply water to the city. This is a conspiracy and nexus between the BMC and the tanker mafia,” said another agitated protester.

“Tanker Free Mumbai’, a campaign launched by the NGO in the first week of May on Facebook and Twitter had been supported by the common man and the celebrities of Bollywood and Marathi films. Mumbai, the financial capital of India is, appallingly struggling to even get its basic amenity sorted out and is suffering from massive water cuts year on year. “Sheer apathy from the civic body and a very tolerant attitude of the Mumbaikar can lead to the city’s decadence. Its time that we stand up for our rights and say “NO” to the private water tanker mafia that is operating within the city,” said a protester.
