The police, with the help of an NGO, busted a milk adulteration and supply racket in Ghatkopar on Thursday morning. Ten suspects were arrested. Around 3,000 litres of adulterated milk was seized in raids at two places. The cops also found unsealed packets bearing names of leading milk brands and utensils used by the suspects to store milk.

Members of the NGO — Adarsh Samaj Seva Sangh (Asss) — had alerted the office of the zonal deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Mulund, about the racket. The DCP’s office ordered officials of the Ghatkopar police station to take action.

The cops raided two locations — in Ghatkopar east and west — and caught 10 red-handed. DCP RM Vatkar said, “The racketeers procured branded milk packets and unsealed them to mix water. Then, they resealed the packets and delivered them.”
H Kiran, general secretary of the Asss, said, “This gang had been operating for the past few months. We kept a close watch on their activities, and tipped of the zonal DCP’s office.”

Afzal Khan, Asss president, said, “The accused used to spike milk with urea and other chemicals during weekends, when the consumption of milk is higher. More than 5,000 families are believed to have consumed the adulterated milk.” Samples of the seized milk will be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory.

All 10 were booked booked for adulteration and criminal intimidation.
