While the media’s spotlight is always on actors and the films they feature in, those who work behind the scenes are often overlooked. In order to fill this gap, Bollywood art director Narendra Rahurikar is launching a magazine that would focus on the “men and women who earnestly and effectively work behind the camera to make it all happen.”

The magazine, called It’s Only Cinema, will be a tribute to the hard work of lesser known Bollywood denizens like make-up artists, stuntmen, camera persons, light and sound directors and choreographers.

“Technicians never get their due in terms of recognition. Also, the fraternity loses out on some great talent within the country because no promotional activity has ever been arranged for them,” said Rahurikar, who has to his credit films like Toonpur Ka Superhero, Golmaal, and more recently, Bol Bachchan.

He added that the monthly magazine will showcase “the real heroes” of Hindi cinema. “It is high time that they step out of the shadows and lay claim to their rightful recognition,” Rahurikar added.

The magazine will not only have interviews and features on technicians, but will also act as a career guide for aspirants in their respective fields. While the first issue will be launched today in an event suburban Mumbai, a website will also be launched in the near future.

“We are backstage actors. It would be nice to get recognised finally,” said Loveleen Bains, costume designer of films like Mangal Pandey and Rang De Basanti.

Musician Kersi Lord recalled that a few years ago a similar magazine was launched, but it failed to take off. However, he is hopeful that this magazine will do well since it is being launched at a time when audiences are more aware of the contribution of technicians.

Udaya Tara Nayar, who has penned thespian Dilip Kumar’s yet-to-be-titled biography, will be the consulting editor of the magazine. “I have chased enough stars in my five decade-long career. It’s time to write about the real stars of the Hindi film industry,” she said.
