Brihanmumbai Muncipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner, Swadheen Kshtriya, today said the civic body in collaboration with the state government is preparing fresh guidelines for making eco-housing and rainwater harvesting mandatory in the megapolis.

Speaking at a meet-the-press programme organised by the Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh, Kshtriya said the process of
finalising the guidelines are in the "advanced stage" and are
likely to be made public on April one this year.

He said new housing societies as well as the existing ones will be encouraged to take up rainwater harvesting.

He stressed for finding out non-conventional means of water sources to tide over the acute water crisis in the city due to shortage of rainfall last year.

"It is for the first time, that there was 25 to 30% less water storage in the catchment areas," the BMC commissioner said.

The civic body is also mulling over proposals of desalination of seawater and revival of lakes in Mumbai, he said.

Kshtriya said four sites have been identified for setting up recycling plants in places like Ghatkopar, Versova, Colaba.

About 100 MLD water would be made available, he added.

Area of focus would be looking for non-portable water sources to utilise it for non-drinking purpose. Similarly, reduction of water theft and leakage which is at present 20 to 25% would be thrust area, Kshtriya said.

After preparing proposal for desalination of sea water, the BMC would seek central funds on the lines of that made available for such a plant in Chennai.

Kshtriya said in case Monsoon fails in 2010, the civic body has kept a contingency plan ready. "But, we should be optimistic," he said.
