A videogame, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, launched internationally on Tuesday, has found itself in the eye of a storm. Reason: it has a level in which the gamer is required to play a terrorist and shoot down innocent bystanders at an airport.
The scene, says the game’s developer Infinity Ward, is heavily inspired by the 26/11 shootout at CST station, Mumbai. However, there is an option which allows the gamer to skip the ‘insensitive’ level.
Rakesh Ranjan, a Bangalore-based gamer, says: “I’m glad the developers have provided an option to skip the level and I think I’ll do just that. I remember sitting in front of the TV all through the day and watching the events unfold in Mumbai. It was shocking, so I’m glad there is an option to skip that level. Else I might have boycotted the game.”
The last version of the game was launched in 2007 and sold around 14 million units across various platforms, making it one of the top-selling games of the year.
