While charging the Congress with post-results non-cooperation in four zilla parishads (ZPs), the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has decided to stake its claim over Osmanabad ZP in lieu of its support to the Congress in Yavatmal ZP. The party has also appealed to the Congress to cooperate in Nanded and Chandrapur ZPs.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar held a review meeting at his New Delhi residence on Monday which was attended by senior party leaders from Maharashtra. The meeting was also convened to decide the course of action in the state ahead of the 2014 assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Pawar admitted that in the civic body elections, the party did not fare as per the expectations though its performance in ZP elections has been better. Pawar said he did not “regret the decision of joining hands with the Congress”.

“If both the parties continue to tread together in all the elections in the state, the alliance could bag all the civic bodies,” Pawar said.

A senior leader, who attended the meeting, said they have been directed by Pawar to take the help of the Congress in ZPs as well as civic bodies. “We have decided to go with the Congress where it has the majority and needs support, and at the same time we expect the Congress to back us where we are falling short by a few seats,” he said.

Pawar backed the party’s Thane district chief, Jitendra Avhad. Senior party leader Ganesh Naik had said the childish leadership in Thane led to the poor show in the civic elections. Pawar said Avhad had done a good job.
