In what appears to be an attempt to quell dissatisfaction within the party and to dissuade the possibility of rebellion, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has decided that the term of mayor will be 15 months, instead of the two and a half years.

When the draws for mayoral post were drawn, the NCP had got the term of the post changed from one year to two and a half years saying that one year was too less a period to perform. That is why the draws were drawn for two and a half years.

However, speaking to the media after NCP’s Vaishali Bankar filed her nomination for mayor’s post, city party chief Vandana Chavan said that Bankar’s term will be for the next 15 months.

“The party high command is of the opinion that maximum number of corporators should get the opportunity to hold high offices. That is why we have decided that the mayoral term will be of 15 months,” Chavan said.

However, observers felt that the move was intended to appease the corporators who were in the race for mayoral post.

The post of Pune’s mayor is reserved for OBC woman for two and a half years. A total of eight corporators were in the mayoral race. Among them were Ushatai Kalamkar, Nanda Lonkar, Vaishali Bankar, Sangita Kudale, Chanchala Kodre, Mohini Devkar, Rajashri Andekar and Ashvini Kadam.

Kalamkar is a second-term corporator and relative of MLA Bapu Pathare. Ashvini Kadam too is a second-time corporator. Vaishali Bankar is a fresher but her husband Sunil was a two-term corporator. Chanchala Kodre, Nanda Lonkar and Mohini Devkar are freshers, but their families enjoy considerable clout in their respective areas. Rebellion by dejected candidates may affect the party’s prospects in the upcoming assembly elections.
