With MLAs in over eight states, Nationalist Congress Party now aims to spread its wings across the nation. A two-day conclave, started on Saturday, focused on this issue. The conclave is being held at Karla, near Lonavala.
While the paper presented by the party general secretary DP Tripathi emphasised that NCP is the party of the future, party president and union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar said that the youth and women should play key role in the party. He said that the Women's Reservation Bill will be passed also in the Lok Sabha in the next month.
Apart from Maharashtra, the party has its MLAs in double digit numbers only in Meghalaya(12), though some of the other North Eastern states have fewer seats in the assembly. Though party has its existing seats in Manipur (3), Nagaland (01) and Orissa (04), Goa (03) and Kerala (02), it now wants to spreads substantially in the neighbouring states such as Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka in the near future.
The focus was clearly evident in the inaugural function on Saturday when the party leadership targeted the national parties and claimed that they are basking in their past glory. “The size and age of any party hardly matters in the age of the coalition governments. The parties that claim to represent the nation have failed to enthuse and energise the youth. Only NCP has that capability to be the party of the future,” Tripathi asserted in his paper NCP-Today and Tomorrow.
The second day of the conclave will see deliberation on the central theme of party’s future and challenges before it. Party chief Pawar who inaugurated the conclave is also expected to sum it up on Sunday.
