The eight men arrested on Saturday for alleged involvement in gunning down Anwar Abdul Rahim Shaikh alias Navva, brother-in-law of notorious gangster, Firoze Bengali, on Kondhwa Road were on Sunday sent to police custody till March 24.

The eight suspects are Nadeer Munir Sayyed (35), Khalid Ismail Sundake (24), Afzal Latif Sayyed (25), Farman Imam Shah (25), John alias Shahanavaj Abdul Shaikh (24), Guddu Mohsin Anwar Shaikh (23), Imran alias Chikki Hamid Shaikh (23) and Atul Gopal Pawar (25). They were produced before a judicial magistrate first class on Sunday.

Assistant public prosecutor, Kiran Bendbar informed the court that a prime suspect, Tausif, is at large. He said all nine persons arrested in the case so far were arrested earlier for other crimes. He said some of them had violated externment orders to kill Navva. He submitted that the police were yet to recover the murder weapon and clothes used by the killers while gunning down Navva.

According to the police, Navva (30) was a notorious goon involved in the murder case of Khada in May 2011. On Tuesday at 10 pm near Parmar Residency, close to Jyoti Hotel in Kondhwa, Navva was returning home in his Santro car, when the suspects shot him twice and he succumbed to injuries.

Police records said Khada was once associated with Bengali. However, the two later split. After Bengali's death in 2009, Khada tried to establish his dominance. Later, Khada joined a political party in 2009 and Navva's son Umar also joined another party, escalating tension in the area. This angered Bengali's associates, who allegedly killed Khada.

On May 11, 2011, Khada was killed by his rivals. Navva was suspected to be the mastermind behind it. He was murdered on Kondhwa road on March 13.
