Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar can expect a unique gift on his 69th birthday this year. The party has decided to take a pledge on December 12, Pawar’s birthday, to combat global warming.
At a party meeting, on Thursday, NCP leaders decided to avoid routine political programmes on their chief’s birthday; instead planned to take up the cause of global warming.
“We have decided to do something apolitical on his (Pawar) birthday. The decision to take up the cause of global warming is our way of showing commitment to a social cause,” NCP leader Madan Bafna said.
Most ministers and workers of NCP, however, were candid in accepting that they knew little about global warming. “The problems that I have to confront in my districts are related to drought. People want to how the government will provide them with two decent meals everyday,” a NCP minister said, on condition of anonymity.
