The Marine Drive police are on the lookout for a 35-year-old man who allegedly cheated a jewellery shop owner and escaped with diamond-studded rings worth Rs16.40 lakh from a five-star hotel in South Mumbai.

According to the police, on Tuesday, the accused, who introduced himself Ajay Kumar, approached Anshul Shah, owner of Dia Jewel, a jewellery shop in CR2 shopping mall at Nariman Point.

“Kumar told Shah that his client, who had checked into Oberoi Hotel, wanted to purchase three gold and diamond-studded rings,” said Kishore Shinde, assistant police inspector of Marine Drive police station.

Kumar told Shah that he would return on Friday, but he went to the shop on Thursday. Shah’s uncle Shankarlal Rathod, 60, was present in the shop. On Kumar’s request, Rathod spoke to Shah over the phone. Rathod, along with his peon then went to Oberoi Hotel with Kumar.

In order to gain Rathod’s confidence, Kumar waved to the receptionists and some other staff at the hotel. “Kumar made the two to sit in the hotel’s lobby. After a few minutes, he asked Rathod to bring the rings from the shop and said he would bring the money from his client. As Rathod left to collect the rings, Kumar took the peon to another lobby and made him to sit there,” said Shinde.

After his return as Rathod looked around for his peon, Kumar disappeared with the rings. “Realising that he was cheated by Kumar, Rathod lodged a police complaint on Thursday evening,” said Shinde, adding that the Kumar was not a guest in the hotel.

“We are going through the CCTV footages of the hotel and the jewellery shop in which he was captured,” said the officer.
