Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi will campaign on behalf of his party for the Mumbai civic elections, despite reservations from the the BJP’s ally, the Shiv Sena.
BJP media in-charge for the civic polls, Atul Shah, confirmed that the BJP had invited Modi and were expecting a reply next week. “We are sure he will address a massive gathering here,” he said, adding that the details would come out next week.
But, the question remains if Modi would be invited to speak. While a few BJP leaders are keen to have him here to ensure the backing of the Gujarati voters, others worried that his presence might harm the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance.
Last year, MNS leader Raj Thackeray had visited Gujarat at Modi’s invitation and lavished praise upon the Gujarat chief minister, much to the discomfort of the Sena.
The worry is that any positive mention of Thackeray would not only embarrass the Sena and BJP, it would be a boost to Thackeray’s MNS.
