Although the citizens of Mumbai have constantly taken up arms against the menace of ugly hoardings, political workers are still turning an apathetic eye.

Several large hoardings have been put up on Carter Road, Union Park in Bandra (W), to wish cabinet minister Narayan Rane on his birthday on April 10.

The residents of the area are justifiably demanding stringent action. “It is very frustrating to see the city being defaced by these illegal hoardings. If they want to celebrate a birthday at all, why should they deface the city by putting illegal hoardings?” said Daphne Warapen, a resident of Union Park.

She added that it was ridiculous that elected representatives were creating such a pompous show.

The licence officials of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that these hoardings were illegal. “No permission has been taken from us to put up these hoardings on Carter Road and the Union Park area,” said an official from the licence department of H-west ward. “Action will be initiated in a day or two for the removal of these illegal hoardings,” he said.

Another civic official stated that removing such hoardings was a challenge.

“In many cases, the followers of these political leaders abuse and threaten the officials for taking action against the hoardings,” he said, requesting anonymity.

Nitesh Rane, son of Narayan Rane, said, “We didn’t ask anyone to put up the hoardings. The followers are doing it on their own to show their love for the leader.”

But he was quick to add, “We have already instructed our followers to remove the hoardings today or by tomorrow evening.”

But some residents say these are lame excuses. “Why can’t he train his followers to put up the hoardings by taking due permission from the BMC?” asked Daphne.
