Firecrackers and drum beating broke the silence of Saturday night here when news of Ashok Chavan taking oath as Maharashtra chief minister broke out.
Jubilant Congress workers erupted in celebrations creating Diwali like atmosphere as soon as Congress chief Sonia Gandhi retained Chavan to head the Congress Legislature Party in the state.
Chavan had taken over the affairs of the state after his predecessor Vilasrao Deshmukh's resignation in wake of Mumbai terror attacks in November last year. His supporters of who are disillusioned with Deshmukh's move to mobilise his supporters to dislodge Chavan from chief minister's race, said they voted and worked for Chavan to give chief minister to the state and not an MLA from Nanded.
The decision to retain him as chief minister was taken in a meeting held by Sonia Gandhi late last night in Delhi. The celebration in Nanded was a huge one despite the fact that all Congress MLAs elected from the district were camping in Mumbai with their supporters.
