A first-year medical student of BYL Nair Hospital has gone missing since September 21. Akshay Meshram, 20, an MBBS student, was a boarder at the hospital’s hostel. His classmates claim that they last saw him on September 20.

“When Meshram did not return for three days, his roommate informed the warden. We later informed his parents. His parents tried to reach him. We filed a missing complaint with the Agripada police station yesterday. His parents have come down,” said Dr Ravi Rananavare, dean, Nair Hospital.

Meshram is from Gadchiroli district. According to his friends, the night before he went missing he had called his father to say that he had received the money he sent.

“Sometimes, students go to their relatives’ place. His parents have tried to find out about his whereabouts, but we are yet to get any information,” said Dr Rananavare.

One of Meshram’s friends said, “On Monday night, he told us he was going to the reading room at 10pm. But he did not return to the hostel. Next day, when we called him, he said he was at KEM hospital with a friend. On Wednesday, he was missing, and the teacher asked us to inform the warden.”

According to his friends, Meshram was an average student who was lagging behind in the course and finding the hospital rules very strict.

Cousin of the missing student from Nair Hospital, Dr Piyush, said, “So far we have not been able to find the reason for his disappearance. We are going by what his friends and teachers have told us. We have filed a police complaint and police has said they will meet some of his friends. Otherwise, we cannot think of anything which might have compelled him to take this step.”
Jayant Sarmukadam, ACP, Agripada division, said: “A missing complaint was filed by the hospital authorities and Akshay’s parents  We are yet to solve Satyendra Singh’s case, who went missing last year.”
