Mystery shrouds Rane aide's death

Rajiv alias Bala Walanju, a local Congress leader from coastal Sindhudurg district and a close aide of outgoing industries minister, Narayan Rane, succumbed to burns on Wednesday in Masina Hospital at Byculla. He was admitted at the hospital on October 26 after he sustained 80% burn injuries at Manora guest house near the Mantralaya.

Vasant Tajne, senior police inspector, NM Joshi Marg police station confirmed it, and said, "Walanju was in the intensive care unit of the hospital for the past ten days and his body was handed over to his relatives in the evening after the post mortem."

Walanju, a former zilla parishad member of Sindhudurg was allegedly taken to the Manora guest house on October 25 midnight and was admitted to Masina hospital with 80% burnt injuries, the next day.

The police said that Walanju tried to commit suicide as he was in love with a 20-year-old girl, who refused to marry him. Walanju had reportedly attempted suicide earlier, near his house at Central Mumb
