MUMBAI: A night out with friends ended in tragedy for Malad resident Reeves D’costa. The 26-year-old musician and disc jockey (DJ) died after drowning at Manori beach in Gorai on Sunday morning. However, his family members are not convinced and have alleged foul play. They claimed that the statements given by his friends differed and also there were several cuts on his body.

According to police officials, Reeves and a group of seven other people went out partying on Saturday night. “After getting drunk, the group went to Gorai and was playing in the water. However, at around 6.30 am Reeves was dragged in by a huge wave. Since he was in an inebriated state he probably didn’t realise that he had gone deep in the water,” said senior inspector Manohar Kalekar.

“The preliminary post-mortem report states that Reeves died due to drowning, but we are waiting for the final report.”

Roland D’costa, his father, in his statement to the police said that Reeves went partying with his friends quite often. He also mentioned his son’s affair with a girl named Alisha Shillong. “The girl’s father was quite angry when he found out about them and even threatened my son,” he said.

Another relative Michael Hendricks however believes there is more to the incident. “The statements given by his friends vary. One said that they saw Reeves drowning and they rushed to help him. Another claimed that he just disappeared in the water.”

“All of them were drunk so they might not be aware of what exactly happened. Also the marks on Reeves body might be due to the rocks in the sea. However, we have called his girlfriend and her father for questioning,” said Kalekar.

A visibly upset Sandra D’costa said that her son had recently started hanging out with a new group of friends. “On Saturday night he came home to inform me that he would be late. This upset one girl Annabelle D’silva, a model coordinator,” said Sandra, adding, that Reeves spent a lot of time at Annabelle’s house composing music for his album.
Annabelle refused to comment saying that she was still in shock.
