Taufiq Qureshi, Ustad Khan’s son and brother of tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain will perform.
A music event in the memory of Ustad Alla Rakha Khan will be held in the city on Friday to mark the 92nd birth anniversary of the late tabla maestro. Taufiq Qureshi, Ustad Khan’s son and brother of tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain will perform.
The programme is being organised by Sa Va Ni Sur Sangeet, where apart from Qureshi, other noted musicians will also perform. Qureshi will enthral the audience with his trademark style, which incorporates body and vocal percussions to create a unique rhythmic image.
Rakesh Chaurasia on flute along with Vijay Ghate on tabla will mesmerise the Pune audience with a joint recital. “I still remember meeting abbaji (Ustad Khan) during a musical concert where he was the chief guest. He used to listen to our performances patiently and always came up with suggestions to improvise on our music. I am looking forward to my performance,” said flautist Chaurasia, who is the nephew of flute maestro Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia.
Apart from the senior artistes, this musical saga will have a performance by 18-year-old Yashwant Vaishnav, who hails from Korba in Chhattisgarh. He started playing the tabla when he was three and got his initial training from his father and tabla player Rajendra Vaishnav.
“I have not seen abbaji but I am honoured to perform in his memory. I will be presenting teen taal and I am excited to perform in Pune,” said Yashwant. This is his seventh visit to the city. “I was nervous when I performed for the first time. But Pune has a receptive audience. They boost one’s morale and enjoy the performance,” added Yashwant. The evening will also feature the release of an album by Qureshi.
