Twenty-five-year-old Vinod Joshi, a chartered accountant, has already started calculations to readjust his travel budget. Barely had he come to terms with the autorickshaw and taxi fare hikes, that the news of fuel price rise has left him complete shattered.

“My monthly income is Rs50,000, out of which I set aside
Rs12,000 for the travelling expenses of my family, which includes my working wife and two school-going kids. Now, taking into account the petrol price rise for the car that I use and the taxi fare hike for my wife and kids, my travelling budget will shoot up to Rs17,000,” said a distraught Vinod.

His wife Meena has another woe, the increase in price of cooking gas. “What about the additional budget to run the kitchen? My cooking gas cylinder will cost Rs35 more. The price hikes will have a cascading affect on our overall budget. It means we will have to readjust our savings,” said Meena.

The rise in LPG prices has wrecked budgets of all housewives. “We have been cutting down our expenses, but now we will have to compromise further on our needs. No matter how much the prices rise, we can’t stop using LPG and petrol. I already dread month ends, now I don’t know how we will manage to save and survive,” said Indira Shikre, a housewife.

Most Mumbaikars find the new rates of petrol and LPG unacceptable, but admit that they have to come to terms with it as they have no choice. “How does the government expect us to survive if prices continue to shoot upwards? Our income hasn’t increased, but prices keep soaring by the day,” said Arun Shailar, a salesperson.

Further, the government’s decision to allow fuel companies to decide on fuel prices has not gone down too well with citizens. “It will ruin monthly budgets of the common man,” said Mahavir Singh Rana, an employee with securities trading firm.

“My monthly fuel expense is anything between Rs10,000-12,000 as I travel regularly between Nariman Point and Andheri. Now, it will further go up.”
