Weathermen have said that the trend will continue on Sunday too. The downpur expected on Sunday will be heavier than that of Saturday. The silver lining of the heavy rain is that the six lakes that supply water to the city are close to maximum capacity.
Six lakes that supply water to the city from Thane district were helped by the heavy rains that lashed the city. The city and the catchment areas received heavy rains for the last few days and all lakes are now close to being full up to the brim. The Tulsi and Modak Sagar lakes started overflowing on July18 and July 20 respectively. The others— Vihar, Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa are about four feet away from their maximum limit.
Water logging was seen in quite a few areas. Hindmata, Kalachowkie, Mahim Junction, Andheri-Kurla road, Milan Subway and Ghatkopar experienced water logging but it receded in some time.
Colaba recorded 63.2mm of rainfall while Santa Cruz registered 72.8mm of rainfall in 24 hours. The civic control room classifies this as heavy rain.
The Central Railway was affected by the downpour as there was water logging on the rail tracks near Thane station. The trains on the line were 20 to 30 minutes behind schedule.
Fourteen incidents of tree fall were reported in city and suburbs. In the city area there cases of tree failing were reported while the eastern and western suburb reported six and nine cases respectively.
A portion of Bhageshwar Sadan, a vacant building situated behind Paradise cinema in Mahim collapsed due to the downpour. No one was injured in the collapse as Mhada had already evacuated the building.
The rains even claimed a victim as a six-year-old girl who fell in an open drain on Friday was found dead. She fell into the drain at Amrutnagar, Ghatkopar (West). The fire brigade fished out her body and rushed it to Rajawadi Hospital, but the doctors declared her dead before admission.
