The 19-year-old youth who threw out a four-year-old girl from the running Bhusaval Passenger train near Vidhyavihar railway station, may have some mental illness.

“Chhoto Samar Mondal seems to be mentally ill,” said Dilip Chavan, ACP (crime) of Mumbai railway police. “He contradicts his statements every time police questions him.”

Besides giving a false name first he also told the police that he did not throw the baby from the train. He, Chavan said, told the police that she herself jumped out of it. The doctors in JJ Hospital would examine him and give a report to the police about his mental condition.

The teenager sneaked out of his uncle’s home at Kandivli on Monday night. He was staying with his uncle Prabal Biswas since he came to the city from West Bengal six months ago. Biswas told Kurla railway police on Wednesday that his nephew studied up to standard VII. He came to Mumbai in search of a job and was staying with him since then. Chhoto helped his uncle in his masonry work.

According to senior police inspector Dilip Gore of Kurla railway police, during preliminary investigations, the teenager who was handed over to the police by co-passengers after the incident, told the police that his name was Chhoto Devanand Sharma.

However, later he told them his real name.

But Chutto is yet to tell the police why he threw the child out of the train.
