Officials of Charkop police station on Saturday arrested a youth, who attacked a 19-year-old girl when she rejected his advances.

The arrested accused has been identified as Raj Aarya, 23, a resident of Gandhi Nagar in Kandivli (west) and works with a knife manufacturing unit for the last one year. He is a native of Madhya Pradesh.

According to police, the victim, Poonam (name changed to protect identity), resides in Kandivli (west) and works in a private company.

On Friday night, around 8pm, when she was on her way home, Aarya tried to stab her face with a knife, but she covered her face with her hand and sustained deep injury on her hand.

“Aarya was following the victim for more than a week. He would also roam near the bus stop in the morning while she waited for a bus. Sometimes, he also followed her home,” said a police officer.

“On Thursday morning, he approached her while she was waiting at the bus stop for a bus. He fist asked her name and also her mobile number. She initially tried to avoid him but when Aarya started forcing her to tell her name, she got an angry and slapped him” said police sub-inspector Ram Bandhekar, Charkop police station.

“Aarya then left but he decided to take revenge. On Friday night, when she was returning home, he stopped her. Before she could realise anything, he tried to stab her face with knife but she covered her face with her right hand and sustained a deep cut on her hand,” said Bandhekar.

Aarya then escaped from the spot. After hearing Poonam’s screams, some passersby gathered and took her at a nearby hospital, meanwhile her family was also informed about the incident.

The family then approached the Charkop police and filed a compliant. Police started inquiry and found out about Aarya and where he stays. But when they went to his house, he was not there.

“A police team picked up Aarya near his residence on Saturday afternoon. He was arrested and is in police custody,” said a police officer.
